St. Ignatius of Loyola (1491–1556) was a Spanish priest, theologian, and founder of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). Originally a soldier, Ignatius underwent a profound spiritual conversion after a serious injury, dedicating his life to serving God. He became known for his deep commitment to spiritual growth, discernment, and education.
One of Ignatius’s most enduring contributions is the Daily Examen, a reflective prayer practice designed to help individuals become more aware of God’s presence in their daily lives. Ignatius believed that regular self-examination fosters gratitude, humility, and a closer relationship with God. He encouraged his followers to practice the Examen as a way to find God in all things and to continually seek spiritual growth through reflection and action.
The 5 R’s in the Ignatian Daily Examen are: Relish (appreciate the gifts and blessings of the day), Request (ask for guidance and light from God), Review (reflect on the day's events and your responses), Repent (express sorrow for shortcomings or failures), and Resolve (commit to improvement and action for tomorrow). This simple structure helps guide daily reflection and spiritual growth.
